Why Is My Dog Scratching So Much?

Why Is My Dog Scratching So Much?

Understanding Itching, Allergies, and Chronic Inflammation

By Dr. Dina Bascharon, DVM Oak Park Animal Hospital - Oak Park, IL

Serving our community since 1972. Where compassion, prevention, and Pawsitive Longevity® come together.

Persistent scratching, licking, or chewing at the skin is one of the most common reasons dogs are brought to the veterinarian. Occasional itching is normal. But frequent, or intense scratching is a sign that something deeper is going on.

Common Causes of Itching in Dogs

Allergies: Environmental, food, and flea allergies are the most common causes of itching. Dogs may react to pollen, dust mites, mold, certain proteins, or flea saliva. Fun fact, chicken is one the most common protein allergy in dogs.

Parasites: Fleas, mites, and lice can cause intense itching and skin inflammation. Even a single flea bite can trigger severe itching in sensitive dogs.

Skin Infections: Bacterial or yeast infections often develop secondary to allergies and cause redness, odor, and discomfort.

Dry Skin or Hormonal Disease: Dry skin, thyroid disease, and other hormonal imbalances may contribute to chronic itchiness.

Why Chronic Itching Matters

Ongoing inflammation damages the skin barrier and allows infections to recur. Your doctor may recommend a medicated shampoo to soothe the skin barrier. Chronic inflammation also contributes to systemic health issues and accelerated aging. This is due to the skin not being able to fully heal.

Itching and Pawsitive Longevity®

From a Pawsitive Longevity® perspective, chronic itching is more than a skin problem. It is a sign of inflammation that can affect immune health, comfort, and quality of life. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment reduce flare-ups, improve comfort, and help dogs age more comfortably.
