General Medicine and Services

Therapeutic Pet Massage - Oak Park Animal Hospital provides therapeutic pet massages by a nationally certified canine massage therapist, Debby Barron. Using a specific protocol of techniques, pressures, and joint movements, the massage involves manipulating and stretching all of the body's soft tissues. Just like human health is enhanced by regular massage, the same can be said for our furry friends. Every system in the body benefits from massage, as does every type and age of dog. For more information, visit Debby's website at or send her an email at [email protected]

Wellness Examinations - Regular wellness exams are the most effective way to keep your pet healthy and prevent illness or disease before they become too difficult or too costly to treat. At Oak Park Animal Hospital, we believe that twice a year for life is the best way to ensure your pet's health and notice any changes. A human year equates to approximately 7 animal years, so your pets are aging more quickly than their age in human years! Every six months equals about 3.5 human years, in which everyone agrees a lot can change.

During your pet’s wellness exam, the veterinarian will do a comprehensive examination of your pet from nose to tail. This includes checking their eyes, nose, teeth and any dental disease, ears, fur/skin, body condition score/weight, check the body for any lumps, manipulate the joints to detect any joint disease, check the anal area and listen to the heart and lungs. The veterinarian will also discuss your pet’s nutrition, explain heartworm control and parasite prevention, and address any concerns or questions you may have. The annual wellness exam is also when your pet should be updated on their vaccinations.

Senior Pet Wellness Care - At Oak Park Animal Hospital we celebrate senior pets. The health of your pet can change quickly as they age and changes can go unnoticed. Early detection and intervention leads to a longer life of good health. Our goal is to help your pet enjoy a lifetime of good healt1h and good quality of life.

Starting around age 7, your pet will enter into their senior years. As pets, they often start to develop the same diseases as human seniors do such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, endocrine disease and cancer. Early detection and prevention of these diseases can minimize unnecessary suffering.

As a senior pet, it is important to bring your pet in for routine examinations, diagnostic screening and let our veterinarians know of any changes in your pet’s health as soon as they occur. Our staff and veterinarians will help you understand the common medical conditions that your senior pet faces and devise a regular monitoring plan.

Vaccines and Preventative Care - At Oak Park and Ambassador Animal Hospitals we tailor your pet’s vaccination protocol based on their individualized risk assessment and the lifestyle they lead. Vaccinations and checking a fecal sample are an essential part of your pet’s preventive health care plan.

A basic vaccination series should be a part of your pet's schedule during the first four months of life. It protects your pet from infections and illnesses, including Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Corona Virus, Canine Influenza, Lyme Disease, Bordetella (kennel cough), and Parainfluenza. If you acquired a pet that is older than four months and that has not been vaccinated, the vet will use a different protocol.

Microchip Identification - Year after year, animals go missing and are never found again. Microchipping your pet is a safe, effective way to avoid this from happening in your household. A microchip is a small electronic device that is about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted between the shoulder blades, under your pet’s skin, and remains there for the life of your pet.

The procedure is quick, easy, and as painless as receiving a vaccination. Each microchip has a unique number, which is added to a national registry along with your name, address, and locating information. Most animal hospitals, shelters/humane societies and animal control centers have electronic scanners which read the number on your pet’s microchip and allow the pet to be returned home. At Oak Park Animal Hospital, we use the AVID Microchip system.

Nutritional Counseling - Proper diet is an important part of your pet's health. Should your pet need a new diet due to health concerns, or you are just looking for a healthy alternative to your current brand, we offer individual consultations and nutritional plans to help keep your pet healthy. We carry the Hill's Prescription brand for you to purchase.

Behavior Counseling - Pets often show illness or anxiety through improper or changed behavior patterns.  Let our staff help you determine what is appropriate behavior and what you can do to change inappropriate behavior.

Dermatology - Hair loss and constant scratching can indicate fleas, food allergies, or other more serious skin conditions. We provide specialized dermatological services to all of our patients including allergy testing and allergy treatments.

Baths and Nail Trims - Hygiene is important. We gladly offer baths and nail trims to our patients. We do not provide complete grooming services.

We regularly work with local area shelters and rescue organizations.  We do not offer adoption services.
